Fastest Growing Occupation: Network Systems and Data Communications

According to the most recent data published by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, Network Systems and Data Communications Analysts is projected to be the fastest growing occupation over the next decade. Employment in this occupation is projected to grow by more than 53% until 2016. Moreover income in this occupation will continue to be in the highest quartile.

The bureau of labor publishes their projections every other year. The most recent report was published in 2007 and projects employment trends out to 2016. Network Systems and Data Communications Analysts projected growth rate of 53% leads a group of 30 occupations that are projected to be the fastest growing. These occupations have growth rates of 27 percent or greater, much faster than the 10-percent average for all occupations.
 
Network Systems and Data Communications Analysts is one of only six occupations that are projected to be the both among the fastest growing (in terms of percent increase) and the largest number of additional positions. More than 140,000 new positions are expected to be created over the next decade.
 
The Bureau of Labor Statistics report points out: "Computer specialists in general, and especially the five such occupations listed [among the fastest growing occupations], are expected to grow very rapidly as organizations continue to adopt and invest in increasingly sophisticated information technologies. Robust demand for efficient communication systems and new Internet and mobile technologies will spur strong growth in these areas, as will the need for more secure computer networks."
